Shockwave therapy is quickly becoming a popular way to address chronic conditions that haven’t responded to other treatments. In as little as five minutes and with no pain killer or manual exercises, it can provide pain relief and speed up recovery for chronic bone and tissue issues. Shockwave therapy delivers a high-energy acoustic wave to the damaged or injured tissue, creating biological changes that regenerate and repair bones, tendons and soft issue. The therapy also stimulates the activity of bone cells and can be used to accelerate fracture healing, disintegrate calcium buildup and restore mobility.
At Panther Sports Medicine, we bring in the latest technology so that we can provide the best care for our customers. For our shockwave therapy treatments, we use the Storz Medical Masterplus 200®, the leading maker of shockwave technology. We have the ability to supplement the radial shockwave treatment with the MP200® plus VACU-ACTOR to treat soft tissue.
Treatments are done by one of our highly trained and compassionate physiotherapists. Shockwave administered by a physiotherapist may be eligible to be covered by extended health care benefit plans.
Shockwave therapy is very safe. In fact, shockwave therapy is not very much different than ultrasound technology, it simply uses the sound waves differently. And there are virtually no side-effects! While some patients report some mild discomfort such as tingling or redness for a day or two after treatment, these are usually very short-lived.
Shockwave therapy can help improve a number of issues, all while providing pain relief and advancing healing. More often than not it is used for chronic and acute conditions when other treatments aren’t working.
Shockwave therapy is used to help treat:
Back and neck pain
Plantar fasciitis
Heel spurs
Tennis elbow
Shin splints
Knee pain
Stress fractures
Strains and sprains
Muscle aches
Rotator cuff and shoulder problems
Achilles issues
Shockwave therapy often will provide healing benefits to more than one issue, providing cumulative pain relief.
Shockwave therapy is often used in conjunction with other treatment options. Your physiotherapist may include it in your treatment plan initially or add it down the road if other treatment options have not provided the necessary results.
When you come in for your first shockwave therapy session at one of our Calgary clinics, the physiotherapist will first take the time to show you our Storz Medical Masterplus 200® and explain how it works. Then, your physiotherapist will use a special wand hand piece that briefly dispenses the waves directly to the injured tissue areas. By stimulating these cells, the body’s natural self-healing mechanism is triggered and your damaged tissue will begin to regenerate.
Shock therapy is actually a very low-effort treatment, it only lasts about five minutes per treatment. Patients often have to come in 3 to 6 times spaced 7 to 10 days apart in order to maximize benefits of your treatment. The injured area will continue to heal up to three months after the last session.
