Workplace Ergonomics: Improving Your Sitting Posture

For many people, sitting at a desk is a major part of the working day. Whether working in an office or from home, spending hours at a computer can contribute to discomfort in the neck, shoulders, back, wrists, and hips.

Workplace ergonomics focuses on creating a workspace that supports your body and allows you to work comfortably. Good ergonomics is not about finding one perfect sitting position. Instead, it is about having a comfortable setup and changing positions regularly.

Start With Your Chair

Your chair should provide comfortable back support while allowing your feet to rest securely on the floor or on a footrest. Adjust the chair so that your legs are comfortable and your back is supported.

Avoid sitting on the edge of the chair for long periods, as this may encourage you to lean forward toward your computer.

Position Your Screen

The position of your computer screen can significantly affect your neck and upper back. A screen that is too low or too far away may cause you to repeatedly bend your neck or lean forward.

Position the screen so that you can look at it comfortably without constantly moving your head or upper body forward. If you regularly use a laptop, a separate keyboard and mouse can make it easier to position the screen at a comfortable height.

Keep Your Shoulders and Arms Relaxed

Your keyboard and mouse should be close enough that you do not have to reach forward or to the side. Try to keep your shoulders relaxed rather than raised or tense.

Frequently used items such as your phone, notebook, or mouse should also be within easy reach. Small adjustments like these can reduce unnecessary strain during the workday.

Remember to Move

Even a well-designed workstation cannot replace regular movement. Staying in one position for hours can lead to stiffness and fatigue.

Take short movement breaks throughout the day. Stand up during phone calls when possible, walk around between tasks, or gently move your neck, shoulders, arms, and legs.

If you use a sit-stand desk, alternate between sitting and standing rather than remaining in either position for too long.

Make Ergonomics Work for You

Everyone's body and workstation are different, so there is no single setup that works for everyone. Your height, work duties, equipment, and personal comfort should all be considered when adjusting your workspace.

If you regularly experience pain or discomfort while working, an ergonomic assessment or professional advice may help identify possible contributing factors.
