What is Plantar Fasciitis & Why Does It Cause Heel Pain?
Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of chronic pain on the heel. The Plantar Fascia supports the arch of foot. It is a thick ligament that connects the heel to the ball of the foot and toes.
Plantar fasciitis is the irritation and inflammation of the plantar fascia due to overuse. It can be caused by playing sports or exercising on a hard surface, prolonged standing, wearing shoes with poor arch support, walking or standing barefooted, exercising without stretching.
Risk Factors for Plantar Fasciitis
Some conditions that make you prone to plantar fasciitis include:
- Flat feet or high arch
- Obesity
- Tight calf muscles
- Repetitive high impact activities - running, jumping
- Prolonged standing on hard surfaces
Symptoms of plantar fasciitis:
- Heel Pain and pain in the arch of foot
- Stiffness
- Swelling around heel
- Pain with first few steps after prolonged rest or after getting out of bed
Treatment for Plantar Fasciitis
Rest - It is important to take a break from activities that worsen heel pain to prevent further injuries.
Activity Modification - Low-impact activities like swimming and cycling put less strain on foot and can replace high impact activities like running and jumping.
Stretching - Foot and calf stretches
Ice - Rolling your foot over a cold water bottle for 10-15 minutes is effective in reducing inflammation. This can be done 3-4 times a day.
Orthotics/Shoe inserts - This gives additional support to the arch of foot. Supportive and well cushioned shoes should be worn at all times.
