& Pain Management

Your Calgary Source for Managing Muscle and Joint Pain

Pain management is a big part of caring for your injury, allowing you to continue to do your daily activities and heal. Our Oakridge clinic in Calgary’s southwest offers various types of injections and pain management techniques to help with diagnosis, reduce inflammation, regenerate joint lubrication.
Our compassionate physiotherapists understand how debilitating pain can be and speak to you about your options and available treatments.
Our goal at Panther Sports Medicine is to find a personalized solution that not only help you manage the pain, but also help your body recover and heal.
There are various options for pain management offered at our Oakridge Clinic:

Anti-inflammatory Injections

Our physicians often injections to treat inflammation. These injections can be used for muscle, tendon and joint injuries, and by treating the inflammation, you will feel less pain and also be better able to do your physiotherapy exercise and heal.

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS)

Electrical nerve stimulation is a treatment for pain that can be used for acute pain (e.g., after surgery) or for chronic pain (e.g., low back pain). It is a form of electrical energy sent in various waveforms to the nerves through electrodes or patches placed on the skin. TENS is a noninvasive way to override or block signals from the nerves to the spinal cord and brain. Pain messages may be altered enough to provide temporary or even long-lasting pain relief. In addition to controlling pain, this type of electrical stimulation can also improve local circulation and reduce or eliminate muscle spasm.

Viscosupplementation

Viscosupplementation is commonly used to treat knee osteoarthritis. It works by replacing joint lubrication with a hyaluronic acid, a key component of health joints. This treatment helps restore motion and treat pain.

Other Pain Management Options

Have questions about a pain management option not listed? Perhaps the below options have been discussed, our physicians can refer you for these services if they feel they will be beneficial to your care.
The following pain management services are not offered in our Panther Clinics:
  • Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

Radiofrequency ablation is a treatment where radio waves are used to create heat and destroy a part of a nerve. Once the nerve is destroyed, you should no longer feel the pain from the worn out, painful facet joints. This procedure is also sometimes called a RFA (which is short for radiofrequency ablation), a rhizotomy, or a neurotomy.
  • Epidural Steroid Injections (ESI)

Epidural steroid injections (ESI) are commonly used to control back and leg pain by reducing inflammation and swelling. They do not fully cure any of the injuries, but they can control the symptoms for prolonged periods of time. In many cases, the ESI is used to control the symptoms so that you can participate in a physiotherapy program, become more active, and be better able to control your chronic symptoms.
  • Piriformis Muscle Injections

Piriformis muscle injections are both diagnostic injections and therapeutic injections, commonly used to determine what is causing buttock and sciatica type pain. These injections work to eliminate pain temporarily by paralyzing the piriformis muscle and stopping spasm in the muscle. If the piriformis muscle is injected and your pain goes away for several days, then it is very likely that a portion of your pain is caused by piriformis syndrome. Once you and your health care professional know what structure is causing your pain, you can begin to explore options for treating the condition.
  • Facet Joint Injections

These injections are primarily used to diagnose chronic spine conditions, but they can also help to treat the painful condition, although they may not provide you with any long-term relief. Facet joint injections eliminate pain temporarily by filling the facet joint with an anesthetic medication that numbs the joint and ligaments. If your pain goes away for several hours, then it indicates that it is very likely the joint or its closely related tissues that are causing your pain and our physiotherapists can then begin to explore options for treating the condition.
  • Spinal Cord Stimulators

A spinal cord stimulator, also called a dorsal column stimulator, is an implanted electronic device used to help treat chronic pain. These devices have been in use for the treatment of pain for over 30 years and they continue to improve. The spinal cord stimulator will not cure your pain, but you should see a reduction in your pain of 50 percent or more if the stimulator procedure is successful. The goal of the spinal cord stimulator is to allow you to be more active, have less pain, and take less pain medication.
  • Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy is a treatment used to treat loose ligaments and joints by injecting an irritant, such as dextrose solution, into these tissues to provoke a regenerative tissue response. Prolotheraphy has been proven to improve the stability and treat pain.
As you can see, there are a number of options.  Book an initial appointment at one of our Calgary physiotherapy clinics and we will discuss possible solutions for your specific injury and pain.
